SD Extended Leadership Session 2012

SD recently held an Extended Leadership session to bring together the leadership team and also start discussions on how we, as a Department, will roll out the Leadership Principles that were adopted by the City last fall. The initial part of the session was spent reviewing The Ways, the City’s strategic plans, and looking at how our work, as individuals and as part of the team, supports the achievement of these strategic plans. We also talked about the opportunity that is before us, given that our Department leads three of the six Ways and many of the transformational projects within the city. As well, we discussed some of the challenges that individuals and teams within our Department face each day and identified several common issues including: communications within the Department, City and with citizens, staffing resources and capacity, and also clear direction and expectations on where we are going in the future. The second half of the session looked at the five Leadership Principles that the City adopted last fall and how we, as a Department, are implementing the principles and bringing them to life within our work environments and teams. It is important to remember that these principles are intended to guide all staff in their day-to-day activities and interactions with others, making a difference every day. The Principles are: We are one city We are proud to serve the public As stewards we lead We do as we say I make a difference every day We recognize that to achieve these principles and make meaningful contributions to building the city that we want Edmonton to be, we must engage all staff to bring these principles to life.
