MobileLJThe Java LiveJournal client for cellphones, pagers, and PDAs

http://netninja.com/files/mobilelj/

MobileLJ is a Java 2 Micro Edition MIDlet designed to run on cellphones and PDAs. It allows you to log in and post simple jounal entries to LiveJournal. The client conforms to the lowest common denominator of the J2ME devices. This allows it to run on any of these devices, but limits its capabilities to simple posts with a subject and a text entry--no moods, no music, no user icons. Simple text-based posts. (You will find that this is difficult enough on most devices because you have to enter text on a phone keypad!) MobileLJ is presently in beta. It has been tested to work on Sun's J2ME emulator. It has also been proven to work on a Handspring VisorPhone. I do not have access to Motorola phones or RIM Blackberry pagers, so have not been able to emperically test them, but it is assumed they work as well. Basically, any wireless Java [2 Micro Edition] that supports the CLDC (Connected, Limited Device Configuration) spec and raw socket connections ("socket://hostname:port") will be able to run the MobileLJ client. As you may or may not know, J2ME applications are delivered using two files. The first file, with the extension *.jad, is a text file describing the application: where to get the zip file, how big the zip is, where to get the zip, and other bits of metadata. The second file, with the extension *.jar, is a zip file containing the application itself. Various J2ME devices will have different installation procedures, as follows: If your device supports downloading the J2ME application from the internet You simply need to point the device to the application descriptor, the *.jad file. This tells the device how and where to download the application. Simply point the device to http://netninja.com/files/mobilelj/MobileLJ.jad If your device requires you to download and install using a cable You will need to download and install the application. If you need the *.jad file, us the link above. You will certainly need the *.jar file, available at http://netninja.com/files/mobilelj/MobileLJ.jar If your device is a Palm device Palm devices have a slightly different installation. You will need the Java runtime from Sun. The *.jad and *.jar files get wrapped up in a *.prc. This is installed just like any other Palm application, but needs to be installed aside Sun's runtime. The Palm MobileLJ client to download and install is http://netninja.com/files/mobilelj/MobileLJ.prc
Programmers interested in the MobileLJ architecture can read the Architecture Documentation and are invited to download, review, and contribute to the source code.

PS 3 chip details

The "Cell" processor that will power the next version of the PlayStation game console will also be adaptable for advanced scientific research, but you won't have to be a rocket scientist to program it.
That is the pledge of one of the chief architects of the Cell, jointly developed by IBM, Sony and Toshiba, who on Friday sought to allay fears that the chip would create huge programming challenges for game developers just starting to learn their way around the complex circuitry that powers the current PlayStation 2.
"We're very much aware of the need to balance between innovation in architecture and the ability to leverage that innovation," H. Peter Hofstee, a researcher in IBM's Systems and Technology division, said during a break at an IBM press event here. "The learning curve for this platform should be significantly better than previous ones."
The three companies announced their Cell plans three years ago, describing an advanced processor tailored for demanding multimedia tasks. The companies said earlier this week that they plan to begin test production of Cell chips early next year, with the first Cell-based products--workstation PCs for computer graphics production--set to arrive late in the year.
Sony and Toshiba both plan to start selling high-definition TV sets powered by the chip in 2006, which is also when Sony is expected to introduce the Cell-powered PlayStation 3.
Hofstee said the Cell will benefit game developers not only by giving them a stable and easily approachable foundation for games to run on, but by powering the workstations they use to produce games. The upshot is that developers should be spending a lot less time waiting for their equipment to render the animation they create.
"We think it's going to be a much more seamless and speedy process for developers using these workstations," he said.

Besides workstations, game machines and TV sets, Cell is also likely to power certain types of scientific supercomputers, streaming media servers and image analysis systems, all of which have continually expanding needs for processing power. Hofstee said Cell taps into an emerging "convergence between what we think of as supercomputing and what we use in the entertainment space."
Beyond that, the sky's the limit, according to Hofstee, who said the Cell development team set out to create a flexible design that would dramatically increase processing power while skirting growing chipmaker concerns about power consumption.
"We've created something that is very flexible," he said. "Having a more generic architecture will allow people to do new things."

Nokia edge phone.

Nokia on Wednesday bulked up its lineup of phones that use EDGE, or Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution, a speedier cell phone standard that has been slow to gain acceptance among wireless carriers. The Nokia 6620 is the third EDGE phone that the company has released, but it's the first "smart phone" for EDGE networks that's capable of creating and e-mailing videos using an embedded camera and other advanced cell phone features.

Film to premier on cell phones Friday

Film to premiere on cell phones

At a time when most Americans can't get local movie listings on their cell phone screens, an Indian carrier is putting an entire film onto wireless phones. Makes America Online's big deal about bringing the "Star Wars" trailer to PCs a day early seem kinda retro.
According to IndiaFM--a co-sponsor of the promotion--a "much talked-about campus caper" called "Rok Sako To Rok Lo" hits theaters on Friday, but Airtel subscribers can watch the entire feature on their tiny little EDGE-enabled cell phone screens Thursday. We learned this from Boing Boing, which got it from Gizmodo, which must have a Delhi bureau or something.
An entire movie on your small, small screen, before it hits the big screen. Not entirely uncool--if you ignore the eye strain, the 90 minutes or more of data connection charges and the issue of whether the phone battery will last for nearly two hours of video.

Developer case study:Quickoffice Premier on the Sony Ericsson P910
To be invited to be part of a Sony Ericsson product bundle is a golden opportunity for a developer. But it also takes a level of in-depth involvement that may overwhelm a small organization. This case study will describe the process, challenges and lessons learned when the company Mobile Digital Media was invited to have their Quickoffice Premier suite of applications pre-loaded for the launch of Sony Ericsson's latest Symbian OS-based smartphone; the P910. More>>

Quickoffice Premier is a suite of personal productivity applications designed to extend the office to mobile smartphones and handheld devices. The applications Quicksheet, Quickword, and Quickpoint are Microsoft Office compatible Excel spreadsheet, Word processor and PowerPoint presentation applications. They allow users to work in a native file format.

This is the URL for Ecirc online.

Stuff from around the net

A DDoS attack is a common online assault that aims to overwhelm network bandwidth using a flood of data, to prevent access to servers.
"Exeem is a new file-sharing application being developed by the folks at SuprNova.org. Exeem is a decentralized BitTorrent network that basically makes everyone a Tracker. However it appears this P2P application will completely replace SuprNova.org; no more web mirrors, no more bottle necks and no more slow downs. Exeem will marry the best features of a decentralized network, the easy searchability of an indexing server and the swarming powers of the BitTorrent network into one program.
On the contrary, she's a trend. Most of her friends -- many of them geeks and übergeeks -- live this way, the internet at the center of their relationships.

Don, I have placed Ecirculation into Production (soft launch) this evening. The url is http://permits.gov.edmonton.ab.ca

When testing, I was unable to upload a file. Phillip, I am on course until Thursday. I will need your help with getting the file upload/download to work. Marcia, I may need your assistance with connecting to the production File Upload/Download hardware as well. Thanks.

I got the below error on the File Upload screen:
Errors:
Unexpected Server Error

Don, if you plan on doing some tests, create a subdivision job in POSSE, then make sure you attach a Web Applicant. You can then login to the web, as the Web Applicant and perform all other functionality.

Thanks for testing the latest development changes this morning. As of noon today, we have fixed all the issues.
If there is anything else you find, do let me know.

Good morning.
Yuen, are you still coming in today? I called your office, but no answer.
Don, it is important to finish our development work and testing by 3pm today because the development database is being destroyed in prep for the 3 tier environment. I must have all development work migrated to another database by the 4pm today. If we do not complete our work today, development cannot resume until December 13th, pushing back the web component migration to Production to Dec 15th or even later.

Don,
That might be so but with the architectural changes VPN would stop working. Even the IT group has to be very careful when making changes as Test is going and Development is coming to replace it. With the refresh from production to development having developers outside of our group only complicates the project and increases the risk of affecting users. Our best professional recommendation is that we manage the environment with minimal exposure to users. Therefore in this case we have chosen to limit VPN until the environment is stable.
I hope this helps.
ThanksMarcel

Don,
Access is not an issue. We have scheduled time this morning to work directly with the contractor and can easily complete the work. The issue is that we have two project managers (yourself and John) that could help to ensure that we can get working on it as agreed to. Had we realized that times were changing; yes we could have made other arrangements but since we didn't we are now required to get this completed today. Otherwise, implementation will be impacted by the whole architecture project.
We have set aside resources here at Scotia Place that are waiting to work on these changes and only want to get working on it.
John, Michael, Don is there something you can do to help us?
